Living With A Narcissist: How To Deal With Them

Having a narcissist in your life can be aggravating and draining emotionally. It's possible that they're the center of your connection. Their expectations may make you feel criticized and fatigued.

Narcissists believe they are more important than others and seek for praise. They are conceited, take advantage of people to obtain what they want, and believe they are special or unique.

Characteristics of a Narcissist

They also overestimate their accomplishments and talents, need continual adoration, feeling envious of others, believing others envy them, and lacking empathy.

People with narcissistic tendencies are generally charming and charismatic. Especially in relationships, they don't often reveal harmful behavior right away.

1. Learn about them
Knowing who they are may also help you accept the situation for what it is and set reasonable expectations for yourself.

2. Set limits for yourself
Make sure you know what your limits are. It's fine if it irritates or disappoints the narcissist. It's important to remember that it's not your role to manage that person's emotions.

3. Watch what you say
Manly claims that narcissists don't handle constructive criticism well. Make remarks in a thoughtful, positive manner. It's preferable to avoid immediately confronting a narcissist. As tough as it may be to continually tiptoe around them, managing their need to feel in command may be preferable.

4. Maintain your composure
If they try to pick a fight or gaslight you, try not to react (making you doubt your own reality). Consider them like a 6-year-old who feels let down for being asked to do his homework.

5. Get a support system or counselor
Living with a narcissist can make you feel insecure, confused, and self-conscious. Make sure you have a supportive core group of people in your life. Better still, get the help of a counselor and seek advice.

Note that you cannot speak for people's negativity, but you will be judged based on how you react.
