Revisiting Feminist ideologies for sociocultural balance

The society no doubt has failed the female folk, with so much glass ceiling at workplace, income inequality , abuses and violent conducts. We have produced men with machismo vibes, mysogynists, arrogant, proud and boastful, boys with little or no kitchen knowledge and disrespectful. They grow up becoming who they were nurtured to be, some inevitably becoming beaters of women and filled with ego.  It is true that the Feminists’ appeal at seeking for a fair, just and balanced society by addressing issues that affect the female folk is worthy and essential for progress. However, in exercising the rights of women to protest and gain more relevance, thereby boosting their economic and social status, how cautious or loose can we be, especially among Africans and the vast majority of people in Europe and America who still believe that the family institution is the bedrock of the society ? Is it OK for everyone to be a Feminist? Replacing Family Institution or reshaping it? Historically,

WHY SUICIDE RATE IS ON THE INCREASE: AN ESSAY ON THE CAUSES OF SUICIDE.

The prevalence of suicide in Nigeria and the forms it takes call for a more scientific evaluation of the motives especially at a time of economic uncertainty. Many have attributed the rise of suicide to depression and lack of support for those who need psychological help. However, taking a clue from a man credited to have taken the most succinct scientific approach to the study of suicide, Durkheim (1858-1920). According to him, the rate of Suicide is consequent upon the level of Social Integration. The more socially integrated a person is, that is, how he/she makes meaning of life within a social context, the less likely he is to committing suicide.  On the other hand, the less socially integrated an individual is, the more likely he is to commit suicide. Here are some of Durhheim’s findings in early 20 th century Europe; 1.        When comparing Protestants and Catholics, he discovered that the Suicide rate among Catholics were not common as a result of the social cohesion a

A new approach to the understanding of Suicide

Image
The Nigerian Experience: Suicide commitment in Nigeria is reaching a frightening dimension, a state of emergency and shocking, to say the least, considering the fact that Nigerians are known to value their own lives regardless of his/her situation. Perhaps, maybe the socio/economic situations weren’t as bad as it is at present. Before delving deep into the prevalence of suicide in Nigeria , it is important for us to understand the concept in its totality rather than the subjective definition based on what we see happening around us. A new approach to understanding the concept of Suicide Suicide is not just about an instance of killing oneself intentionally as described by most clinical definitions. In today’s world, especially in Nigeria I have observed a trend and a catastrophic one for that matter, which makes me rethink the definition of suicide . Consider a woman for instance, who is married to a man who abuses her and often causes physical injury on her body, yet she sti

Recidivism rate is on the increase; Why are people going back to jail?

Recidivism is fast becoming a concern among the mirage of problems facing our polity. The Criminal Justice System has been the one dishing out the sticks, convicting people and ensuring they have a space in jail for various offences.  The prison, as well as, other correctional facilities has failed to improve the lives of inmates. The reality as observed from records in different correctional institutions is that first offenders are likely to come back to Prison. In the United States of America , the figure is staggering despite the efforts of the Obama administration to tackle the increase in the number of incarcerated folks. In Africa, especially in Nigeria , incarcerated persons are finding the Prison yard to be their home. The question is, why are they coming back? Reasons for the high rate of Recidivism Investigating the reasons for the high rate of Recidivism is complex, not because we do not know the reasons but because the basis of returning to jail varies across g

How to make the most from One on One meetings

Image
In a virtual world, where medium of communication has moved away from traditional forms, many business men and women have argued that online platforms such as social networking sites have made one on one meetings less attractive, strenuous and unnecessary. To such business owners, they are of the opinion that the task involved in setting venues, having to schedule appointments and the cost of transport are burdens that can be avoided. Apart from this, they are still unsure whether or not a deal is going to be secured through the physical presence of a Client. Some argue that since we can now do all we need to do online and get the job done, making deals and engaging with Clients through one on one interaction may not be necessary. However, what they fail to understand is that meeting people one on one can be as effective and most rewarding as connecting with people online. Understanding the Setting It is essential for us as business executives, company representatives or agent

MIGRATION ISSUES - FROM HEAVEN TO EARTH (FLASH FICTION)

INTRODUCTION: From Heaven to Earth is written in fiction in order to paint the picture of how we transformed from our Celestial forms into people separated by borders, colour and language, and how those at a disadvantage sought to re-unite with their former ‘friends’ in order to seek for a peaceful and prosperous abode, away from the horrors of hunger, diseases and war. However, on earth, there is a stumbling block. There’s suspicion in the air, as their fellow brothers and sisters from heaven (as they think), seem not to have a clue as to whether they’ve once shared the same celestial space. Migration hence, has become a movement from frying pan to fire. FROM HEAVEN TO EARTH Thunders raging, lightning engulfing, musical displays and celestial orchestra, the atmosphere was charged and frenzy. We stood in the presence of Olodumare (the Almighty) in Paradise and knelt down to open the covered golden cup, wherein is kept our destiny on earth. Just like a lucky dip, fastest finge

SELF IDENTITY THROUGH THE POP CULTURE

Image
THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS In a world of over 7 billion people with varying skills, special abilities and knowledge, no man or woman can live in isolation. We certainly need one another for our needs to be fully met. Interaction hence, plays a vital role in our day to day life. Therefore, individuals are compelled to submit their instinctual, individualistic will and take up the social will as dictated by culture through learning. It is often argued that what defines our roles has little to do with biology, it is beyond our genes and chromosomal features. The way we perceive ourselves and the definition of the ‘self’ is not a personal thing just as your ability to read is not instinctual. The process of child development is characterized by imitation, taking up roles assigned to us based on gender, sex, colour etc, and obeying the socially acceptable standards of behavior and punishment, for deviating. We become religious not because we were born to be, our preferences for the foo
