High and Low Moments at the 95th Oscars

The 95th Oscars delivered a night full of highs and lows, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. The Academy broke with 62 years of tradition by swapping out the usual red carpet for a new "champagne" color, which resulted in lackluster looks and underwhelming contrast.

Meanwhile, host Jimmy Kimmel nailed his third-time gig, delivering a solid cold open filled with topical one-liners, acknowledgments, and good-dumb dad jokes.

One of the most emotional moments of the 95th Oscars night was the Everything Everywhere All At Once star's win, which managed to mine fresh feelings despite sweeping every possible precursor. In contrast, corporate overlord Disney brazenly inserted a free ad for their latest live-action project in the midst of the awards show, leaving viewers feeling as though they were watching a commercial.

Justice for Jenny the donkey was served when she joined Kimmel on stage in an Emotional Support Animal vest, prompting cheers from the whole room. However, it was later confirmed that the donkey on stage was not the real Jenny, but a local ringer. Nonetheless, the moment still managed to brighten up the evening.

However, there were also some surprising moments during the night. An Irish Goodbye's producers Tom Berkeley and Ross White led the crowd in a sing-along to celebrate their star James Martin's 31st birthday after winning Best Live-Action Short. Meanwhile, the in memoriam callout by Kimmel on Robert Blake's notorious 2001 murder charge was savage but funny.
Finally, the Best Song serenade by composer M.M. Keeravani was unexpected and joyful. Keeravani sang a paraphrased version of the Carpenters' 1972 soft-pop smash "Top of the World," expressing his wish for RRR to win and put him on top of the world. Despite the highs and lows, the 95th Oscars ceremony promised and delivered three-plus hours of chaos, tears, and Cocaine Bears.
