China Begins Issuing Visa to Foreign Tourists, Are You Ready to Go?

China, the birthplace of the Covid-19 pandemic, has announced that it will resume issuing visas to foreign tourists for the first time since the virus outbreak three years ago. Apparently, the country has declared victory over the virus and is now ready to welcome visitors with open arms. How very generous of them!

Valid visas issued before China closed its doors to the world on 28 March 2020 will be honoured starting on 15 March. Visa-free entry will also resume in Hainan Island and Shanghai for cruise ships. Tour groups from Hong Kong and Macau will be allowed visa-free entry, and Chinese consular offices abroad will also resume processing visa applications. Who wouldn't want to visit a country that has had such a great track record in handling pandemics?

The removal of the last cross-border restrictions imposed to tackle Covid marks a major step towards the resumption of normal life in post-pandemic China. Yes, because nothing says "normal life" like a government that tries to cover up a virus outbreak and then blames it on other countries.

Before the pandemic, tens of millions of international visitors came to China each year, and its tourism industry has been hard hit by strict anti-Covid measures. But fear not, the country can expect a significant increase in international arrivals, now that it has decided to reopen its borders. Who wouldn't want to experience the thrill of potentially catching a deadly virus while on vacation?

In addition to allowing foreign tourists, Chinese citizens will also be allowed to travel on tour groups to 60 countries, up from 20 previously. Because nothing says "let's spread the love" like sending your own citizens to other countries during a global pandemic.

China said its gross domestic product grew just 3% in 2022, the worst in nearly half a century. But don't worry, Beijing has set a 5% target for this year, because apparently, nothing motivates a country like a pandemic that has killed millions of people worldwide.

The zero-Covid policy that was lifted in December sparked rare protests against China's leader, Xi Jinping. But he has since solidified his grip on power in the Communist Party and secured a record third term as president. Congratulations, Xi Jinping! Your country is now famous for giving the world a pandemic and then pretending like it never happened.
