REFUGEE CRISES- A CAVEAT
A LITMUS TEST FOR ACCOMMODATING REFUGEES
1.
Individual
personality
2.
A
test of social loyalty: Will they be loyal to the new establishment in which
they find themselves or they find it ‘unholy’ and disgusting? This leads to;
3.
Religious
affiliation/Belief system: The rate of accommodation or adaptation of a group
depends on the substance of relationship as enshrined in such customs they
subscribe to or their articles of faith.
4.
Criminal
records
5.
Size
and disposition towards procreation or family planning
6.
Economic
Impact: Having a large junk of dependent population poses a serious threat to
the economy of host nation with strains on social welfare.
At some point in time, refugees or Immigrants will become
scapegoats in the event of economic downturn, political/social disorder. Israel
in Egypt, Jews in Germany under Hitler, Black lives matter movement, and many
other ethno-religious conflicts in history has targeted migrant populations.
Also, at some point in time, the issue of political
participation and representation will surface that is, Minority vs Majority
leading to social upheavals and subsequently leading to the emergence of social
movement and pressure groups, political parties, or at the very extreme, terror
groups. Since inequality and social differentiation will always occur in such
societies, it is impossible to maintain the highest rate of loyalty.
Host nations will also have to contend with the issue of new
emerging sub-cultures and counter-cultures and must adequately be able to
either accommodate or denounce them in relations to best standard, which is in
fact determined by local politics and general public opinion and not
necessarily the position of the United Nations or friendly foreign policies.
Social loyalty can be tested and effectively verified. It is
by so doing that host countries can effectively integrate today’s refugees into
their new found home and it will also guide countries facing refugee crises to
reject those who may constitute deviants and a stumbling block in the pursuit
of peace happiness or a common course of progress.
